• Let the furniture breathe. Especially if you are in a tighter space, it can be tempting to push the furniture against the walls to make the most of your floor space. However, doing this can often have the opposite effect of making a room feel smaller. Instead, try putting a bit of space, even a few inches, between your furniture and the walls to make a room feel cozy, yet spacious.
• Measure twice, order once. There are many online tools, often free, that can be used to help you arrange your space. Enter in the dimensions of the room and find out what dimensions will work for the allotted space. This will prevent any missteps of ordering furniture that is too small or large for the scale of the room.
• Find a focal point. Some are natural, such as a large window or fireplace. Others you might need to create with furniture or a beautiful rug. Choose a natural or created focal point and design around that space for your room.
• Let in the light. If your room isn’t well-lit with windows or overhead lighting, choose lamps at varying heights for light and interest.
